At the Klink Community Festival, I led a workshop that focussed on an experimental approach to the composition of images in photography. The focus was on ‘sharpening eyes’ for photography and inviting participants to explore different principles of composition. I was inspired by Joakim Moller and his work. The workshop consisted of three central tasks:
In the first task, the participants were asked to create photos based on the design principles described on the inside of their portfolios within one hour. The aim was to creatively implement the principles and show their own interpretation of the rules.
The second task dealt with the concept of symmetry. Participants were given a printed image showing an axis of symmetry and asked to find creative ways to mirror this axis. This served to deepen their understanding of symmetry and explore new visual approaches.
In the final task, participants were asked to combine the photos they had taken - or as many as they needed - to create a collage. They could also use transparent paper to introduce different layers and add depth to the compositions. The theme of the collage was free to choose.
The workshop provided a platform for deepening the understanding of compositional principles and exploring new creative techniques in photography.
